To ostatnia część trylogii, która rozpoczęła się powieścią „Z Ziemi na księżyc” i kontynuowana była w utworze „Wokół Księżyca”. Faktycznie, dwadzieścia lat później odnajdujemy w niej trzech bohaterów tych powieści: prezesa Barbicane’a, sekretarza J. T. Mastona i kapitana Nicholla.

Posiadając nieobliczalną wyobraźnię, ci niepoprawni artylerzyści tym razem zajęli się jeszcze bardziej imponującym projektem niż podróż do naszego satelity, a mianowicie  o zmianę nachylenia osi obrotowej kuli ziemskiej oś, co spowoduje inny kąt padania promieni słonecznych. Nasza stara planeta będzie wówczas posiadać umiarkowany klimat pod wszystkimi szerokościami geograficznymi, a bezpośrednią konsekwencją będzie stopienie się lodowców na biegunie północnym. należy dodać, że ziemie Arktyki zostały nabyte przez pewne towarzystwo, którego prezesem był Barbicane, ciągle przedsiębiorczy, bardzo poważnie rozważający eksploatację węgla kamiennego w kopalniach położonych na biegunie i jego okolicach! Niezbędne uderzenie, które ma przestawić ziemską oś, miało pochodzić z działa, jeszcze ogromniejszego od słynnej Kolumbiady.

Tunel wydrążony w boku starego wulkanu Kilimandżaro miał pomieścić działo, mające wystrzelić pocisk o wadze stu osiemdziesięciu tysięcy ton, przy użyciu sekretnego materiału wybuchowego, wymyślonego przez kapitana Nicholla. Prace, wykonywane pod kierunkiem Barbicane’a, są szybko wykonywane dzięki wsparciu wysoko wynagrodzonemu lokalnemu władcy. Pomimo strachu i gniewu wszystkich narodów przeciwnych temu szalonemu projektowi – który oczywiście wywoła straszliwe kataklizmy – następuje odpalenie i niesamowita eksplozja wstrząsa afrykańską ziemią.

W rzeczywistości nie następuje żadna zmiana w ruchu obrotowym Ziemi i nie dochodzi do żadnej katastrofy na naszej planecie. Dzieje się tak dlatego, że Maston, któremu powierzono obliczenia, mimowolnie popełnia kardynalny błąd, zresztą odkryty przez francuskiego inżyniera, Alcide’a Pierdeux. Maston staje się pośmiewiskiem swoich rodaków, zaklina się, że już nie będzie zajmował się matematyką, lecz poślubi bogatą wdowę, która od dawna okazywała mu żywe przywiązanie.

Sans dessus dessous

Voici le dernier volet de la trilogie qui débutait avec De la Terre à la Lune et se poursuivait avec Autour de la Lune. En effet on y retrouve, vingt ans plus tard, trois héros de ces romans: Barbicane, Maston et Nicholl.

Jamais à cours d’imagination, ces incorrigibles artilleurs ont conçu cette fois un projet encore plus grandiose que le voyage dans notre satellite: il s’agit de donner au globe terrestre un axe de rotation différent, qui déterminera une nouvelle exposition aux rayons solaires. Notre vieille planète connaîtra alors un climat tempéré sous toutes ses latitudes et, conséquence directe, verra fondre ses glaces du pôle Nord. Il faut préciser que ces terres arctiques viennent d’être acquises par une société dont Barbicane est le président; toujours entreprenant, il envisage très sérieusement d’exploiter les houillères du pôle! La poussée nécessaire pour déplacer l’axe terrestre sera donnée par le recul d’un canon encore plus énorme que la Columbiad.

Foré et assemblé dans le flanc de l’ancien volcan Kilimandjaro, l’engin doit propulser un projectile de cent quatre-vingt mille tonnes à l’aide d’un explosif secret, inventé par le capitaine Nicholl. Dirigés par Barbicane, les travaux sont exécutés rapidement grâce à l’appui rémunéré du souverain local. Malgré la frayeur et la colère de toutes les nations opposées à ce projet insensé, – qui va évidemment provoquer des cataclysmes effroyables, – la mise à feu s’effectue, et une explosion formidable ébranle le sol africain.

Il n’en résulte, en réalité, aucune modification dans la rotation de la Terre et aucune catastrophe planétaire. En effet, Maston, chargé des calculs, a fait involontairement échouer l’entreprise en commettant une erreur monumentale, qui sera d’ailleurs révélée par l’ingénieur français Alcide Pierdeux. Maston, devenu la risée de ses compatriotes, jurera de ne plus faire de mathématiques et épousera une riche veuve qui lui témoignait depuis longtemps un vif attachement.

Renseignements complémentaires: Jules Verne demanda à l’ingénieur Albert Badoureau d’effectuer les calculs nécessaires à la crédibilité de l’opération du redressement d’axe. Ils figurent dans un «chapitre supplémentaire» annexé au roman, mais uniquement dans la petite édition Hetzel in-18°.

The Purchase of the North Pole

The North Polar Practical Association has plans on making a purchase of all the territory north of the 84th parallel. This association is in reality the members of the Baltimore Gun Club, including Secretary J.T. Maston, President Impy Barbicane and Captain Nicholl. Through the generosity of Mrs. Angelina Scorbitt the association is successful in its bid for this region of the globe. Only the world wonders why they have bid for this uninhabitable region. With the property secure, the association makes there plans known, they intend on altering the axis of the earth, so that this Artic region will obtain a temperate climate, allow them access to the large coal deposits they expect to find there. And how will they accomplish this? The same way these men made it to the moon, with a large gun. With the Gun Club's infallible J.T. Maston making the calculations, the association surely can't lose in the proposition.
